Michael Metcalfe was born in 1960 in the northern industrial town of Huddersfield, England. In 1981, he received a Bachelor's degree from the Royal College of Science and in 1989 was awarded a doctorate from the University of Oxford.
Metcalfe's art seeks to reflect the chaos, complexities and contradictions that bleed together from the physical world around us and the psychological world within. Metcalfe utilizes three- dimensional decoupage and repeating imagery to project a fractured snapshot of experience. That fracture is then itself fractured by visceral acrylics. His repeated images recall Warhol and his splattered use of acrylics remind us of Pollock. However, Metcalfe challenges us with a vision that is unique, simultaneously vibrant, mesmerizing and provocative.
